Khao Sok straddles the central mountain range which
forms the backbone of the Malaysian Peninsula and
is located just south of the Isthmus of Kra, the peninsula's
narrow neck.
The size of Khao Sok National
Park is only
645 square kilometres, but it borders Sri Phang Nga
National Park in the West and Kang Krung National
Park in the North as well as two wildlife sanctuaries,
bringing the whole area to nearly 4000 square kilometres.
Therefore it is one of the most important connected
areas of tropical rain forest in Southern Thailand.
The
forest is still largely intact and has many
outstanding features like spectacular limestone mountains,
cliffs, caves, rivers, many waterfalls and a rich
bio diversity of flora and fauna. Gaur, banteng, serow,
tapir and sunbear are roaming the remoter park areas,
while elephants, tigers, leopards and some smaller
cats survive in perilously small numbers. Most other
mammals are nocturnal or arboreal and likewise difficult
to spot. They include gibbons, macaques, langurs,
civets, lemurs and several species of squirrel. Some
183 bird species have been recorded, including pheasants
and 5 hornbill species. |
